I am:
A writer on design, whose books include Hello World: Where Design Meets Life and, most recently, Design as an Attitude. My weekly design column for The New York Times was syndicated worldwide for over a decade. Born in Manchester and based in London, I am chair of the boards of trustees at The Hepworth Wakefield art gallery in Yorkshire and Chisenhale Gallery in London, and a founding member of the Writers for Liberty campaign for human rights and freedoms. My latest project is Design Emergency, a collaboration with Paola Antonelli, senior design curator at MoMA, with which we are investigating design’s response to the Covid-19 crisis and its role in redesigning and reconstructing our lives in the future.

I believe:
That design is one of the most powerful tools that can help us to address complex ecological, social, political, economic and technological challenges.
